At its heart, The Kind Bus has always been about one simple belief: books should be shared freely, generously, and without barriers.
That’s why registering The Kind Bus as a Little Free Library bookmobile felt less like a milestone and more like an official acknowledgment of what it has always been—a moving space for stories, connection, and community.

What Is a Little Free Library Bookmobile?
A Little Free Library bookmobile brings the spirit of a traditional Little Free Library—take a book, leave a book—to multiple neighborhoods instead of just one fixed location.
Rather than waiting for readers to come to the books, the bookmobile brings books directly to the people, expanding access and laying a path of creativity wherever it goes.
The Kind Bus embraces this idea fully, offering free books to readers of all ages in an imaginative, inclusive, space.
A Brief History of Little Free Library
Little Free Library began in 2009 when Todd Bol built a small, schoolhouse-style book exchange in honor of his mother, a teacher who believed deeply in literacy and community.
What started as a single box of books quickly grew into a global nonprofit organization. Today, Little Free Library supports more than 150,000 registered libraries across all 50 states and over 120 countries, helping share hundreds of millions of books worldwide.
The organization’s mission is simple yet powerful: to be a catalyst for building community, inspiring readers, and expanding book access for all through a global network of volunteer-led Little Free Library book-exchange boxes.

Little Free Library was honored to receive the 2020 World Literacy Award from the World Literacy Foundation.
They are a Top-Rated Nonprofit by the Great Nonprofits organization and received Guidestar’s Platinum Seal of Transparency.
Little Free Library is a recipient of the Library of Congress Literacy Award, the National Book Foundation’s Innovations in Reading Prize, and many more. Discover more of their milestones and awards.
They respect all people and communities; therefore, condemn book bans and the placement of hate materials in Little Free Library book-sharing boxes.
Why Registering the Kind Bus Matters
Registering The Kind Bus as a Little Free Library bookmobile connects it to a worldwide network dedicated to free access to books and community-led literacy.
Registration reflects a commitment to:
providing free books without expectation
supporting literacy for all ages
removing financial and social barriers to reading
fostering connection through shared stories
It also means The Kind Bus is officially recognized as part of a trusted nonprofit ecosystem focused on book access and community building.

A Shared Vision of Literacy and Community
Little Free Library began with one box of books and a generous idea. The Kind Bus carries that same idea forward as a Little Free Library bookmobile, bringing stories to people wherever the road leads.
Together, they represent a belief that literacy should be accessible, joyful, and shared.
If you see The Kind Bus out in the world, step inside. Take a book. Leave one if you can. And become part of a community built on stories.
